Flipping the Script on Aging: Celebrating Older Americans Month with VTA
05/01/2025

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM). Each May, we take time to honor older Americans and recognize their contributions in our communities. This year’s theme, Flip the Script on Aging, encourages us to see the beauty in aging and embrace a more empowering and realistic view, challenging stereotypes and transforming how society perceives this season of life and those fortunate enough to live it.

At VTA, we’re proud of our many programs that help flip the script. Older adults throughout Santa Clara County use VTA buses, light rail, and paratransit services not only for medical appointments and running errands, but also to volunteer, socialize, and pursue new passions. Providing these transportation solutions and access to safe, reliable and affordable mobility options are essential to living independently, creating a sense of freedom and the ability for older adults to live life on their own terms. VTA is committed to providing services which include accessible vehicles and facilities and paratransit services. We provide travel training programs to help seniors navigate the transit system with confidence, and discounted fares through our senior Clipper Card and other fare assistance options to help financially.

As we celebrate Older Americans Month, VTA staff will be participating in several events at senior and community centers throughout Santa Clara County. We will engage older Americans and provide them with many opportunities for staying active in the community, and connected for purpose and exploration, helping them lead active vibrant lives.
